NOTICNG THE LIVING LIGHT
Exploring Human-Fungi Relationship through Bioluminescence

2024
In a time of pressing ecological, political, and social concerns, there is a growing need to shift our focus beyond humans and cultivate a deeper care for both ourselves and our environment.
This project delves into the practices of observing and gathering data about bioluminescent fungi, reframing the practices as ‘arts of noticing’, an approach narrated by anthropologist Anna Tsing. Through this exploration, the study aim to foster a new understanding and appreciation of nonhumans world and its potential role in sustainable futures.
The primary goal of this project is to invite people to rethink the roles and relationships between humans and fungi, reposition ourselves in the ecosystem. By engaging with the glowing mycelium, participants are encouraged to reflect on the entanglement between human life and microbial existence, exploring the potential for new sustainable practices and collaborative futures.
I conducted a diary study involving several participants who integrated bioluminescent mycelium into their living spaces. Over several days, participants documented their observations, feelings, and reflections on their interactions with the fungi. They recorded their experiences through written entries and photographs, capturing the placement and glow of the mycelium in their homes.
